I spent a few days out in the car traveling this week. While on the road when lunch rolls around I attempt to be quick, but avoid fast food joints. Wandering into Garrens Cafe in Pickens, SC on Wednesday was like stumbling into 1962.
Mom & Pop Garren have been taking care of "the kids" for years. The kids are townies of all ages, but what caught my attention was a group of high schoolers that stopped by for lunch and immediately headed for a big round family style table in the back instead of a booth. No menus were used, but instead there were pleasant greetings and agreement on what the students were having for lunch.
It was pleasing to see this is where the students were hanging out instead of at one of the big chain fast food joints a block away. Mom & Pop noticed the logo on my shirt and made a quick inquiry. Then they proceeded to treat me as if I had been one of the regulars for years. I do not think anyone could be a stranger in this old, shopworn cafe.
Mom & Pop were upbeat and chatted with the customers the entire time while they took orders, cooked, and cleaned up. Both of them were interested & involved with the patrons without being intrusive. They joked often and their happiness was contagious. The Andy Griffith Show was playing on a small TV in the corner. It was perfect.
Well done, Garrens Cafe. I hope you are around forever.
