East
Some mornings I look out across the lake to watch the sun rise out of the east. The view does not get old. There is something special about seeing the coming sun rays glide across the water and begin moving the land into a new day.
Afterwards as I leave for the office most of my drive runs due west to town. Lately I have noticed a very small home with a tiny front porch that is along the route. It has caught my attention because of the old man sitting on the porch.
He wears a ball cap and aviator style sunglasses. In his right hand he holds what looks to be a mug of coffee. The old man is positioned with his back to the wall and he faces directly into the sun.
His face is relaxed and there is a trace of a smile. Cars rush on the nearby highway as the day gets going, but the old man appears to be unbothered and at ease. He sits and enjoys his meeting with the morning star.
This meeting did not happen by chance. The details show this man has prepared for the moment. He is ready. Now he relaxs in the moment and savors that time until the sun gets to high to light the porch and the day starts to stew in summer heat and humidity. That will happen later, but now...now all is just right.
Seeing the old man facing into the sun reminds me of how it as we meet Christ. We have other options. We can sleep. We can rush in other directions. We can choose to not be ready.
Or we can choose to do business with Jesus. Everyday he is available and he comes. I'm sure that whole seeking part involves simply turning towards him.
The smile. The warmth. Wide awake resting. Relaxing because it is good. Jesus coming everyday. Let's get ready. Let's join him.

Dad finds Home Sweet Home in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Mom and Dad treated us to Edelweiss for a German meal tonight. Who knew Dad would end up as part of the entertainment?
