On Friday night our friends, Kevin & Cindy, took us to a place called Alando in Bethlehem, PA. The small restaurant serves Kenyan food. Our waiter, Louis, was from Mombasa on the coast of Kenya and went to university in Nairobi. He was familiar with the Mathare slum where Baby Girl works and where Missions of Hope ministers. I ordered a beef dish that included kale and ugali (which is more or less like hardened grits). We had chapati with the meal which is like a tasty naan or flat bread. It was spot on and took me back to many of the meals we had in East Africa last fall. It was a great way to end our trip Up North. Good times thinking of our girls...

My girls, a very large rooster rocking an egg necklace, a plastic easter bunny, and breakfast at Grits & Groceries. That, my friends, was a very good Thursday morning this week. Good indeed.

The other night Denine and I were watching "No Reservations" and Tony uttered the words above. Cool. Then I started thinking about how often I have purchased this kind of food from a street vendor. You can call it stuff-on-a-stick, street meat, a kabob, a skewer, a satay, or any number of other terms.
Over the years I can say I have had beef, chicken, and pork on a stick. Filler has included bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and tofu. I've savored corn-on-the-cob and corn dogs on a stick. Close to the ocean I've sampled marlin, shrimp, scallops, and several other types of seafood. All on a stick. Some were simply spiced, others marinated, and more than one had a side sauce.
In sometimes exotic locales I have sampled more unique meats including goat, lamb, camel, ostrich, boar, and elk. I've wondered if city chicken really is. I've pondered if I really was tasting dog, cat, and horse for which I am not completely sure.
Thinking about this lends a level of comfort. Anywhere in the world where you have hungry people, fire, meat, and a few twigs you can find stuff on a stick. It's is a universal tie that unites us all. At any given moment where the sun is shining on this planet someone is roasting stuff on a stick over a fire or on a griddle. As Tony said, "Stuff on a stick. Nice." Pass the sauce.

Last night after work we ventured over to Ono Hawaiian Foods. For years this tiny restaurant has served honest soul food Hawaiian style. The walls are plastered with signed photos of celebrities and VIPs who have visited over the years. Our booth had a super bad Chuck Norris watching over us.
We arrived shortly after the dinner rush and ended up being the last folks remaining. We had an great conversation with our waiter and asked if it was OK if we sat around a little while after we finished our meal. As the staff cleaned up for the night they pulled a wire across the dining room and began hanging dish towels up to dry overnight. It seems so much more real life that eating at a regular old chain restaurant. It was our privilege to take in a little part of authentic Hawaiian life. Good stuff.
